About the Author
Sabri Bebawi, born in 1956 in Fayoum, Egypt, embarked on a journey that led him far from his roots. After studying law at Cairo University, he moved to the United Kingdom, where Oxford University invited him during his final year of law school. He never returned to Egypt. Following his time in England, he worked as a journalist across Italy, France, and Cyprus before seeking political asylum in the United States. In the U.S., he has taught ESL, English, Journalism, and graduate courses in Educational Technology. Bebawi pursued further studies at UCLA and earned a Ph.D. in Philosophy, English Education, and Distance Learning from Capella University.
Though English is his third language, Bebawi has authored numerous articles, books, and essays on a wide range of topics. Writing novels has long been his ambition, and his first novel, God on Trial, achieved significant acclaim, including a British Literary Award in 2015. His latest work, Chiara, is described as the most sensual, sexual, and philosophically intriguing of his novels and was released on November 1st.
As a child, Bebawi grappled with understanding the complexities of human nature and the human condition. His academic studies in law and philosophy, coupled with his reading of various texts, led him to view the world as a mere illusion. Bebawi remains hopeful for a future free from the constraints of religion, conformity, capitalism, and corrupt governments, resonating with John Lennon’s vision of a better world in his song "Imagine."
God on Trial was named a finalist for the National Pacific Book Award on February 20, 2014.
