Prepositions in English
A university lecture for non-native speakers of English — by Dr. Sabri G. Bebawi
Why Prepositions Are Difficult for Non-Native Speakers
Native speakers of English — whether American, British, or Australian — rarely make errors with prepositions. They absorb them naturally from childhood, without ever thinking about rules. But for non-native speakers, prepositions are among the most challenging aspects of the English language.
The reason is cultural and linguistic: prepositions are not logical. They do not follow universal rules that translate from one language to another. In Arabic, French, Spanish, Chinese, or any other language, the preposition used in a given phrase may be entirely different from the English equivalent — or there may be no equivalent at all. You cannot simply translate a preposition; you must learn how English uses it.
This lecture, drawn from university teaching materials, addresses the most common preposition errors made by non-native speakers and provides clear guidance on correct usage.
